Weekend in New York

As some of you may know, my sister and I won a free trip to New York in November, and I made this very elaborate list of things to do in the Big Apple but there’s just SO MUCH things to do in this amazing city, one weekend wasn’t enough. Still, here’s what I managed to do.

The theme of Day 1 was WALK.

There’s no better way to get to know a city. We rode a night bus in which we barely slept and were dropped in the middle of Time Square at the chirpy hour of six in the morning. It was weird. It was the morning of Black Friday, so we could feel the craziness approaching. Queues were already forming at the entrances of some stores.

With an approximate 1 hour and 3 minutes of sleep in our bodies, we began our day of WALKING EVERYWHERE, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Exhausted doesn’t cover it; we were downright depleted of any energy.

We walked through Time Square.

We walked through Central Park.

We walked to Bryant Park. (Awesome Christmas Market.)

We walked to Chelsea Market. (Such a great ambience.)

We walked through the High Line.

We even RAN to a free tour of the Rockefeller Center. (Which we unfortunately missed.)

The one time we tried to take the subway, we failed. (It stopped after one station and a speaker kept repeating some kind of investigation was going on.)

So we walked through a light rain to get to the One World Trade Center, and we zoomed up the 104 floors as the sun was setting, to catch the most breathtaking view of New York at night. Really, do it. The whole tour is completely worth it.

The theme of Day 2 was EAT.

We ate a “pie” on the way.

We ate a pretzel in the street.

We ate the best pasta ever in Little Italy.

We ate all the time, and not really caring about actual meals, and it was awesome.

In the morning, we did a Free Walking Tour that covered SoHo, the Little Italy, and Chinatown, and we learned so much. It’s crazy how much history there can be within just a few streets.

The afternoon included a cruise to Staten Island, circling the famous statue. And as we got back we realized we wouldn’t make it in time to our show at 8 o’clock, which was Paramour from Le Cirque du Soleil, and which we were dying to see. So we jumped out of the bus in the middle of a street, hailed the first taxi we saw, and listened to our rushed heartbeats for the next fifteen minutes. We made it right on the dot, and fortunately didn’t miss a second of the show, WHICH WAS GORGEOUS.

(In retrospect, it felt kind of great to hail a cab in New York, ya know.)

The next morning, we had a bit of time to visit the 9/11 Memorial before we got back into the bus for 9 hours of jagged sleep.

So yeah, do I need to say this trip was just as amazing as it was exhausting?

  1. congrats on winning the trip!!!
I’ve been to NYC a few times but I’ve never really been a tourist properly to my satisfaction. haha. I have been up in the Empire State Building though (2007), and walked through Times Square more recently (Septmeber) and done a few other things. Suffice to say I will be going back at some point …

    1. I know, right? I feel like I could go 20 times and still find more things to do! There’s just so much and even the things you’ve already done, you can do them differently. It’s just awesome. I’ve never been up the Empire State Building! It’s on my list.
