Book Discussion – Leah on the Offbeat

Author: Becky Albertalli

Genre: YA, contemporary, LGBT

Pages: 341

Publisher: Balzer & Bray

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic. An anomaly in her friend group, she’s the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high. It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended.

My Thoughts

Becky Albertalli freaking ROCKS.

I read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, and I freaking loved it, and I read The Upside of Unrequited, and it was downright awesome, and now THIS? Like, how do you keep writing so well and frankly and being so effin funny? Just how, Becky?

To give you guys a concrete example, if you’ve never had the chance to get your hands on one of Albertalli’s little jewels of YA lit, read this:

I just wish I knew how to feel about Garrett. This shouldn’t be so complicated. It has to be easier for people with penises. Does this person get you hard? Yes? Done. I used to think boners literally pointed in the direction of the person you’re attracted to, like a compass. That would be helpful. Mortifying as fuck, but at least it would clarify things.

I can’t tell which of her books I love best, they’re all so freakingly awesome, but I think I could relate with Leah the most. Especially about the way she never really knows how she feels about people. Like, emotions are hard to decipher, Leah, I feel ya.

And the way sometimes the words just don’t come out, even if there’s literally ZERO reason for you to keep them in. Why are humans so weirdly wired like that?

Leah made me laugh out loud so many times with her deadpan/cynical attitude. I felt a little bad that it took me so long to remember who she was from Simon vs. I mean, it’s been like two years since I read it, and I STILL NEED TO WATCH THE MOVIE WHAT’S TAKING ME SO LONG?

“How did you get so cynical?”

“I’m a Slytherin.”

And I’m the worst kind of Slytherin. I’m the kind who’s so stupidly in love with a Gryffindor, she can’t even function. I’m the Draco from some shitty Drarry fic that the author abandoned after four chapters.

Sooooo, you’ll guess that I definitely gave this book 5 stars because how can I not?

Have you guys read it?

What did you think?

Who’s your favorite character?

What did you think of the ending? (I freaking looved that letter to Simon, it made me want to read it again!)

I’m sorry I’m late with these reviews, guys! I’ll be posting A Court of Frost and Starlight’s Book Discussion later today, along with the winner of my giveaway! I’ve just been so swamped with work and moving out! (I MOVED OUT OF MY PARENTS? DID YOU KNOW THERE’S AN INFINITE AMOUNT OF SHIT YOU CAN HOARD DURING YOUR CHILDHOOD/TEENAGE YEARS? LIKE INFINITE IM DROWNING.)

So, laters!

  1. I loved Leah on the Offbeat so much as well!!! ❤ I laughed out loud, I cried (ahh, I cried!!), and I treasured every word! I related to Leah a lot too. She and Abby were definitely my characters! I want a book with Abby as the central character, so we can have her perspective and more Leah, more Simon, etc.! 🙂 I loved the ending too! It made me want to reread as well! I have yet to read the Upside of Unrequited Love, but I cannot wait to read it!!

Congratulations on moving out of your parents home!! Good luck with all the sorting and organizing!

And thank you! It requires a lot of sorting and organizing, indeed, I never thought it would take so much of my time haha. Good thing that I actually love organizing. 🙂
